and the reason for this has been previously explained under ḥadīth (2843). Accordingly, the isnād is authentic, and Shaykh Aḥmad Shākir has also authenticated it in his commentary on "al-Musnad" (8/169), but this is according to his method of verifying Ibn Lahīʿah and authenticating his ḥadīths, which I find to be an unwarranted leniency! Furthermore, Abū al-Aswad al-Naḍr ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār corroborated Qutaybah: "Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us from ʿUqayl with it." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (9/280) from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq from him. This al-Naḍr is trustworthy, and thus al-Bayhaqī said after him: "Ibn Lahīʿah narrated it connected and well." Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq is al-Ṣaghānī, and he is a reliable and established authority among the teachers of Muslim. Jaʿfar ibn Musāfir contradicted him, saying: "Abū al-Aswad narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb from Sālim from his father with it." It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (3172). I say: There is some discussion about Jaʿfar ibn Musāfir; "al-Taqrīb" states: "Truthful, but he may err." His contradiction to al-Ṣaghānī does not affect [the narration], especially since he also contradicts Qutaybah. Muḥammad ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Nīsābūrī also corroborated them: "Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us with it." It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (12/289/13144)
