- meaning: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, from Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Maryam, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said ... and he mentioned it. I said: This is a good isnād; Ibn Abī Maryam, a group of reliable narrators other than Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated from him, mentioned by Ibn Abī Ḥātim (7/306/1660), and narrated from Yaḥyá al-Qaṭṭān that he said: "There was nothing wrong with him." And from his father, he said: "A trustworthy Madinan shaykh in ḥadīth." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (7/419). And those below him are reliable from the men of the two Shaykhs; with a weakness in the memory of Ibn Abī Uways, whose name is Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh. And the ḥadīth was recorded by al-Bukhārī in the biography of Ibn Abī Maryam in "al-Tārīkh" where he said (1/139/419): Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways said to me with his isnād in the wording: "The Magians let their mustaches grow and shave their beards; so oppose them, trim your mustaches and let your beards grow."
