Ibn Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Hāshimī in Basra said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad al-Khuttalī informed us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Balkhī told me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Abān informed us, saying: Abū Muʿāwiyah from al-Ḥasan ibn Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd from his father from Abū Hurayrah: he said: the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is good, all its men are trustworthy, and here is the explanation: 1- Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, whose father's name is Rāfiʿ al-Ashjaʿī, their client from Kūfah, and he is trustworthy without dispute among the men of the two Shaykhs. 2- His son al-Ḥasan ibn Sālim, Ibn Maʿīn said: "Righteous," as in "al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl" (1/2/15), and three trustworthy individuals narrated from him, one of whom is Abū Muʿāwiyah, and a second will be mentioned soon, and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (6/164). 3- Abū Muʿāwiyah, whose name is Muḥammad ibn Khāzim al-Ḍarīr al-Kūfī, is trustworthy among the men of the two Shaykhs. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Trustworthy, the most knowledgeable of people in the ḥadīth of al-Aʿmash, though he may err in the ḥadīth of others." I said: This does not harm him; because it is rare, and who is the one who does not err?! Despite that, he was corroborated as will be mentioned soon, if Allāh wills. 4- Muḥammad ibn Abān, who is the son of the minister al-Balkhī, the mustamlī of Wakīʿ; among the shaykhs of al-Bukhārī in "Ṣaḥīḥ," al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Trustworthy, a ḥāfiẓ."
