and I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "You will encounter favoritism after me." When ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb distributed garments among the people... etc. It was recorded by Abū Yaʿlá (945): narrated to us by Zakarīyā ibn Yaḥyá Zahmūyah: from Ibn Abī Zāʾidah with it. And through the route of Abū Yaʿlá, it was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (7279). Its narrators are trustworthy—except for the ʿanʿanah of Ibn Isḥāq—; other than Ibn Shafīʿ, for whom I did not find a biography in the references I have. Then I saw him mentioned in "al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr" by al-Bukhārī, and he did not mention any criticism or endorsement. As for the statement of al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ" (10/33) following the narration of Ibn Shafīʿ: "It was narrated by Aḥmad, and its narrators are trustworthy except that Ibn Isḥāq is a mudallis, but he is trustworthy." this is an error; either from him or from the copyist; he intended to say: "Abū Yaʿlá" but said: "Aḥmad"; for it is not in "his Musnad"; rather, he has it in (4/352 and 353) through the route of Qatādah from Anas from Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr, raised, with the wording: "You will encounter favoritism after me; so be patient..." the ḥadīth as previously indicated by my statement: "added from another route" from the narration of al-Bukhārī.
