I do not know him; he is not to be criticized, if Allāh wills, for Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī, who authenticated his ḥadīth, knew him, as did Abū Ḥātim before them. Some of his ḥadīth have a basis from other than his path and supporting evidence; al-Bukhārī and others narrated from the path of Sufyān and others from Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd that he heard Anas ibn Mālik say in a marfūʿ ḥadīth: "You will encounter favoritism after me; so be patient until you meet me," with an addition from another path from Anas—which will come soon—"at the basin." It is with Ibn Ḥibbān (7231) from the first path. It is also extracted in "Ẓilāl al-Jannah" (752, 1102, and 1103). Al-Tirmidhī and others narrated from another weak path from Anas from Abū Ṭalḥah who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me: "Convey my greetings to your people; for they—as far as I know—are chaste and patient." It was authenticated in some copies, and there is no basis for it except that he means its authentication due to its supporting evidence, so it is acceptable in its second part, and it is extracted in "al-Mishkāt" (6242), and al-Haythamī erred; for he included it in "Kashf al-Astār" (3/304) and "al-Majmaʿ" (10/33) from the narration of al-Bazzār, and it is not according to the conditions of the two books. As for the supporting evidence; Maʿmar said: from al-Zuhrī who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "The Anṣār are chaste and patient."
