the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) became very angry at this, and while he was contemplating attacking them, the delegation came to him and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We were informed that your messenger turned back halfway, and we feared that he was sent back by a letter from you due to anger you felt towards us. We seek refuge with Allāh from the anger of Allāh and the anger of His Messenger! And the Messenger of Allāh sought reconciliation with them and intended to act against them, but Allāh revealed their excuse in the Book: "O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful." (al-Ḥujurāt, 6). It was recorded by Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī in "Tafsīr" (25/78), and al-Bayhaqī in "Sunan" (9/54-55) - and the context is his - through the route of ʿAṭiyyah ibn Saʿd from Ibn ʿAbbās (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā) who said ... and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is weak due to the weakness of ʿAṭiyyah and some of those below him; however, it has supporting evidence indicating its authenticity: Firstly, what was narrated by Mūsá ibn ʿUbaydah from Thābit, the freed slave of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent a man to collect the alms from Banū al-Muṣṭaliq..." a similar ḥadīth. It was recorded by Ibn Jarīr and Mūsá ibn ʿUbaydah is weak. Secondly, what was narrated by Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd: ʿĪsá ibn al-Ḥaḍramī ibn Kulthūm ibn ʿAlqamah ibn Nājah ibn al-Ḥārith al-Khuzāʿī from his grandfather Kulthūm from his father ʿAlqamah said:
