that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when he returned from a battle said: "Do not surprise the women [by returning unexpectedly]." And he sent someone to announce to the people that he would arrive in the morning. This was recorded by Abū ʿAwānah in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (5/117), as well as by Ibn Khuzaymah (9/340), and al-Bayhaqī (9/174) through the route of Ibn Wahb: ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad informed me of it. I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. As for the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAjlān, it is narrated by Khālid ibn al-Ḥārith: Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān told us from Nāfiʿ from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stopped at al-ʿAqīq; he forbade surprising the women on the night of arrival, but some young men disobeyed him; and both of them saw what they disliked. It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/104) and al-Bazzār (1485). I said: This isnād is good, as al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī stated in "Takhreej al-Iḥyāʾ" (2/46). The disobedience mentioned in this narration is supported by a witness from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Do not surprise the women at night"; meaning: when one of you returns from a journey, he should not come to his family except during the day. He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) returned from a journey, and two men went ahead after the statement of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam); they came to their families and each found a man with his wife. It was recorded by al-Dārimī (1/118), al-Bazzār (1487), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (11/245/11626) through the route of Zamaʿah ibn Ṣāliḥ from Salamah ibn Wuhrahm from ʿIkrimah from him, and the wording is from al-Ṭabarānī
