in "al-Kabīr" (24/301/765) through the route of Ibn Isḥāq who said: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated to me from his father from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said: Salmā, the servant of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), or the wife of Abū Rāfiʿ, the servant of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), came to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) seeking permission regarding Abū Rāfiʿ who had struck her. She said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to Abū Rāfiʿ: "What is the matter with you and her, O Abū Rāfiʿ?!" He said: "She annoys me, O Messenger of Allāh!" So the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "How did you annoy him, O Salmā?!" She said: "O Messenger of Allāh! I did not annoy him with anything; but he passed wind while praying, so I said to him: O Abū Rāfiʿ! The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) has commanded the Muslims that if any of them passes wind, they should perform ablution." (And al-Ṭabarānī said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Whoever passes wind should repeat the ablution"), so he stood up and struck me, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) began to laugh and said... and he mentioned it. I said: And this isnād is good, its men are trustworthy, men of the two Shaykhs; except for Ibn Isḥāq—who is Muḥammad, the author of "al-Sīrah"—and he is reliable in ḥadīth, and he has explicitly stated the narration, so we are safe from his tadlīs. *
