al-Ḥārith ibn Suwayd came and accepted Islam with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), then al-Ḥārith disbelieved and returned to his people. Then Allāh revealed in the Quran: "How shall Allāh guide a people who disbelieved after their belief" to "except those who repent..." (Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, verse 86-89). He said: A man from his people brought it to him and recited it to him. al-Ḥārith said: "By Allāh, as far as I know, you are truthful, and the Messenger of Allāh is more truthful than you, and Allāh is the most truthful of the three." He said: Then al-Ḥārith returned, accepted Islam, and his Islam was good. I said: The men of its isnād are trustworthy, so it is a ṣaḥīḥ mursal. Thus, it is a strong corroboration for the ḥadīth of ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim. Ibn Jarīr also produced another corroboration for it with his isnād from al-Suddī, mursal and abridged. As for Ḥakīm ibn Jamīʿ mentioned earlier, al-Bukhārī and Ibn Abī Ḥātim included him in their books, from the narration of Abū Kurayb from him, and they did not mention any criticism or endorsement about him. Likewise, Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (8/212), and said: "He narrates disconnected reports." I said: It is as if he did not come across this connected narration of his. For the sake of completeness, it is necessary to mention the four complete verses, which are in (Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, 86-89): "How shall Allāh guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and bore witness that the Messenger is true and clear proofs came to them? And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people. Their recompense is that upon them is the curse of Allāh, the angels, and all people. They will abide therein; their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be reprieved. Except those who repent after that and reform, for indeed, Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful."
