it was recorded by Aḥmad (2/118-119) through the route of Ḥayywah: Abū ʿUthmān informed me with it. I said: And this isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim; for this Abū ʿUthmān is al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd, as in another ḥadīth with Aḥmad (2/97) also recorded through Ḥayywah: Abū ʿUthmān al-Walīd narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Indeed, the most dutiful act of righteousness is for a man to maintain the ties with the friends of his father." It was also recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (no. 41) with the same isnād of Aḥmad, and he said in it: "Abū ʿUthmān al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd narrated to me...", and it was also narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān (431). It was recorded by Muslim (8/6) through the route of Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb, who said: from al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār with it. And it includes a story of Ibn ʿUmar. al-Haythamī erred; for he asserted in "al-Majmaʿ" (7/174) that this Abū ʿUthmān is al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Faḍl al-Baṣrī, who is abandoned! This was refuted by al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Taʿjīl" (p. 504), and he was followed by the scholar Aḥmad Shākir in his commentary on "al-Musnad" (8/243-244) - may Allāh reward them well - but they overlooked another proof, as did al-Haythamī, which is that al-Bazzār also recorded the ḥadīth through the route of Abū ʿUthmān by his name, not his kunyah; he said in "Musnad" (1/115/211 - Kashf al-Astār): Muḥammad ibn Miskīn narrated to us: Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us: Nāfiʿ ibn Yazīd narrated from al-Walīd ibn Abī al-Walīd from Yazīd ibn al-Hād from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār with it in a more complete form, and its wording is: "Among the greatest of lies is to claim lineage to someone other than one's father, and among the greatest of lies is to claim that one's eyes have seen what they have not seen, and among the greatest of lies is to attribute to me what I have not said."
