Then it has been mentioned by more than one person that ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn was the first to be buried in al-Baqīʿ. However, I have not seen this connected through a reliable chain of narration. The highest authority I have found is what Ibn Saʿd recorded (3/397) from the path of al-Wāqidī himself, who said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed us from al-Zuhrī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah, who said: "The first to be buried in al-Baqīʿ among the Muslims was ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn..." And this Ibn Rabīʿah was born during the time of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam); however, the chain to him is weak because al-Wāqidī is abandoned as previously mentioned, and his teacher Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh—who is Ibn Abī Sabrah Abū Bakr al-Madanī—was said by al-Dhahabī in "al-Mīzān": "Aḥmad said: He fabricated ḥadīth." Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr mentioned from the path of al-Wāqidī from [Ibn] Abī Sabrah from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUbayd Allāh from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, and he mentioned it. And this Ibn Abī Rāfiʿ is a trustworthy tābiʿī. Then Ibn Saʿd recorded (3/612) from the path of al-Wāqidī as well, who said: ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn ʿAmārah informed us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm, who said: The first to be buried in al-Baqīʿ was Asʿad ibn Zurārah. Al-Wāqidī said: This is the statement of the Anṣār. The Muhājirūn say: The first to be buried in al-Baqīʿ was ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn. Ibn Shabbah mentioned in his "Tārīkh" (1/96) that he attributed it to al-Wāqidī with another similar, abridged chain that did not mention the burial of ʿUthmān
