"Return it to its owner (meaning: the good dates), and sell the bad dates for cash, then buy the good dates." This was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ" (1/75/2/1393): Aḥmad narrated to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Tasnīm narrated to us, saying: Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah narrated to us; he said: Abū al-Faḍl Kathīr ibn Yasār narrated to us, saying: Thābit al-Bunānī narrated to us, saying: Anas ibn Mālik narrated to us that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was brought some good dates; he said: "Where did you get this?" They said: We had some inferior dates, so we sold two measures for one measure; the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... and he mentioned it. It was also recorded by al-Bazzār in "Musnad" (2/108/1317): Muḥammad ibn Muʿammar narrated to us: Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah narrated to us with it, except for his saying: "for cash, then..." Al-Ṭabarānī said: "No one narrated it from Thābit except Kathīr Abū al-Faḍl, and Rūḥ was unique in narrating it." I say: He is trustworthy, from the narrators of the two Shaykhs, as is Thābit. As for Kathīr ibn Yasār Abū al-Faḍl, a group of trustworthy narrators have narrated from him; as mentioned in "Tahdhīb al-Ḥāfiẓ," and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (5/331 and 7/350), so the chain is authentic. Then I saw that the ḥadīth was also recorded by al-Bukhārī in the biography of this Kathīr in "al-Tārīkh" (4/1/214) from the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Aswad: Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah narrated to us, saying: Kathīr ibn Yasār Abū al-Faḍl narrated to us—ʿAbd Allāh said: Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir praised him well—he said: Thābit narrated it to us
