then Allāh said: O son of Adam! What led you to do what you did? He said: O my Lord! It was out of fear of You (in another narration: out of dread of You, and You are more knowledgeable). He said: So He forgave him for that, and he had not done any good except for tawḥīd. It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/304): Abū Kāmil narrated to us: Ḥammād narrated from Thābit from Abū Rāfiʿ from Abū Hurayrah from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). And more than one narrated from al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). I said: This is a sound, connected isnād from Abū Hurayrah, and its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of Muslim; except for Abū Kāmil, who is Muẓaffar ibn Mudrik al-Khurāsānī, and he is unanimously considered a reliable ḥāfiẓ. And Ḥammād is Ibn Salamah, and he has two other isnāds for this ḥadīth: one of them is from ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah from Abū Wāʾil from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wāʾil from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu): that a man did not do any good at all except for tawḥīd... the ḥadīth. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/398) as such, as a mawqūf narration. It is considered marfūʿ as is evident, and it is as if Aḥmad (raḥimahu Allāh) indicated this by following it with his isnād from Ḥammād from Thābit from Abū Rāfiʿ from Abū Hurayrah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saying similarly.
