in a narration from him, he said: "The people were rained upon during the time of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) one night. When morning came, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'Did you not hear what your Lord said last night? He said: I have not bestowed any blessing upon My servants except that a group among them became disbelievers because of it. As for those who believed in Me and praised Me for My provision of rain, they are the ones who believed in Me and disbelieved in the stars. But as for those who said: We were rained upon due to such-and-such a star, they are the ones who believed in the stars and disbelieved in Me—or disbelieved in My blessing.'" It was recorded by Abū ʿAwānah (1/26-27); al-Nasāʾī (1/227); and al-Ḥumaydī in "Musnad" (356/813). The second: from Abū Hurayrah, similar to the ḥadīth of Zayd but in abbreviated form. It was recorded by Muslim (1/59-60) from two chains from him, and by al-Nasāʾī, al-Bayhaqī (3/358), and Aḥmad (2/362 and 368) from one of them from him. The third: from Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: "The people were rained upon during the time of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam); so the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'Some of the people have become grateful, and some have become disbelievers. They said: This is the mercy of Allāh, and some of them said: Such-and-such a star has spoken the truth.'" He said: "Then this verse was revealed: 'So I swear by the positions of the stars' until 'And you make your provision that you deny' (Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah, 75-82)."
