and I say: this is how its wording appeared in "Mukhtaṣar Zawāʾid al-Bazzār" by the ḥāfiẓ (1/294/448), unlike its wording in "Kashf al-Astār," where it is worded: "he would gesture with a staff when delivering the khuṭbah." This is objectionable to me with the wording "gesture," so I do not know if this addition is confirmed by al-Bazzār—making it one of his errors—or if it is a mistake by some copyist; or perhaps the original was: "he holds" and it was distorted by the copyist?! And Allāh knows best. This; and the ḥadīth has many supporting narrations that strengthen it further; I have mentioned some of them in "al-Irwāʾ" (3/78 and 99), and I have extracted many good ones in "al-Ḍaʿīfah" (2/380-383), and I have clarified therein that his reliance on the staff was not while he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was on the minbar. So refer to it; for it is important. *
- (It is from the sunnah to eat [on the day of Fiṭr] before going out, even if with a date). Al-Bazzār narrated it in "Musnad" (1/312/651): Ibrāhīm ibn Hāniʾ narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us from Abū Shihāb ʿAbd Rabbih ibn Nāfiʿ—a well-known Kūfan—from al-Aʿmash from Muslim ibn Ṣubayḥ from Ibn ʿAbbās who said ... and he mentioned it. And he said: "We do not know it except through this isnād." I said: and it is a sound isnād, though the condition of some of its men was hidden from al-Haythamī; he said (2/199) — after mentioning it with this wording and with the wording of "Awsat al-Ṭabarānī" that follows —: "And in the isnād of al-Bazzār there is someone I do not know." So the ḥāfiẓ commented on it in "Mukhtaṣar al-Zawāʾid," and he said afterwards (1/299):
