- "Indeed, Satan has taken your place among your family; so go with this palm stalk, and hold onto it until you reach your house; then take it from behind the house and strike him with the palm stalk." (1) It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (19/5-6) through the chain of ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah from his father from his grandfather Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān who said: It was a night of intense darkness and rain, so I thought: If only I could take advantage of this night to attend the late evening prayer with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)! So I did, and when the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) finished, he saw me and he had a palm stalk with him, walking on it, and he said: "What brings you here at this hour, O Qatādah?" I said: I took advantage of the opportunity to pray with you, O Messenger of Allāh! He gave me the palm stalk and said ... and he mentioned it. I left the mosque, and the palm stalk shone like a candle, providing light, and I used it to see until I reached my family and found them asleep. I looked in the corner and saw a hedgehog, and I kept striking it with the palm stalk until it left. I said: All the men in the chain are trustworthy and mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb"; however, ʿUmar ibn Qatādah was mentioned by al-Bukhārī and Ibn Abī Ḥātim in their books through the narration of his son ʿĀṣim, and they did not mention any criticism about him. Ibn Ḥibbān also mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (5/146), and his son ʿĀṣim is a well-known successor who died in the year 119, so Abū ʿUmar would be among the senior successors, and someone like him can be used as evidence. He was also followed up, and al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it (19/13-14) through the chain of Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Furwah from ʿIyāḍ ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Sarḥ from Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān with a similar narration
