Abū Dharr was with his sheep at al-Rabadhah, and when he came, the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him, "O Abū Dharr!" but he remained silent. The Prophet repeated it to him, but he remained silent. Then he said, "O Abū Dharr! May your mother be bereaved of you." He said, "I am in a state of major ritual impurity." So a servant girl brought him water, and he went behind his camel and performed a full ablution, then he came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Prophet said to him, "It suffices you..." [the rest of] the ḥadīth. Al-Bazzār included the elevated part of it in his "Musnad" (1/157/310 - Kashf al-Astār): Muqaddam ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muqaddam al-Muqaddamī narrated to us: My uncle al-Qāsim ibn Yaḥyá ibn ʿAṭāʾ ibn Muqaddam narrated to me: Hishām ibn Ḥassān narrated it. And its wording is: "The earth is a purification for a Muslim even if he does not find water for ten years. But when he finds water, let him fear Allāh and let it touch his skin, for that is better." And he said, "It is not narrated from Abū Hurayrah except through this chain; and Muqaddam is a trustworthy person of known lineage." Al-Ṭabarānī said, "Muqaddam is unique in narrating it." I say: He is trustworthy as al-Bazzār and others have said, and he is among the teachers of al-Bukhārī in "al-Ṣaḥīḥ"; likewise, his uncle is trustworthy among his men, and those above him are among the men of the two Shaykhs, so the isnād is authentic, and Ibn al-Qaṭṭān authenticated it as in "al-Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr" (1/154), and he commented on it by saying: "But al-Dāraquṭnī said in 'al-ʿIlal': Its mursal form is more authentic."
