He has a comprehensive biography in "al-Tadhkirah" (3/886-889) where he is described as "the distinguished ḥāfiẓ... Ibn Mardawayh said: He is one of the imams in the science of ḥadīth in understanding, precision, and trustworthiness." His biography is expanded in "al-Siyar" (16/6-15) where it is mentioned from Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿAlī al-Dhakwānī al-Qāḍī that he said about him: "the trustworthy, reliable, prominent in memorization and precision." The ḥadīth is mentioned by al-Haythamī in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (6/203-204) and he said: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and its narrators are trustworthy."

- "Indeed, among my companions are those who will not see me after I leave them." It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/290), al-Bazzār (3/172/2496), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (23/319/724 and 394/941) through the route of Abū Muʿāwiyah, who said: al-Aʿmash narrated to us from Shaqīq from Umm Salamah who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf entered upon her and said: O mother! I fear that my wealth will destroy me, am I the wealthiest among Quraysh? She said: O my son! Spend, for I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: (and she mentioned the ḥadīth), then he left and met ʿUmar, informed him, and ʿUmar came and entered upon her and said: By Allāh, am I among them? She said: No, and I will not inform anyone after you. Al-Bazzār said: "It was narrated by al-Aʿmash and others from Abū Wāʾil from Umm Salamah, and Abū Wāʾil narrated three ḥadīths from her, and some people inserted Masrūq between him and her."
