It was recorded by Aḥmad (no. 650/1375) and his son (1202), al-Tirmidhī (2/294, 493-494), al-Nasāʾī (1/139-140), Ibn Mājah (1/354), and al-Ṭayālisī (1/113-114), and from him by al-Bayhaqī (2/273), and also by al-Tirmidhī in "al-Shamāʾil" (2/103-104) through various chains from Abū Isḥāq from ʿĀṣim ibn Ḍamrah who said: "We asked ʿAlī about the Prophet's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) voluntary prayers during the day, and he said: You cannot bear it. We said: Tell us about it so we can take from it what we can bear. He said: "and he mentioned it." Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good ḥadīth, and Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm said: The best thing narrated about the Prophet's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) voluntary prayers during the day is this." It is narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak that he considered this ḥadīth weak. It was only considered weak by us—Allāh knows best—because it is not narrated like this from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) except through this chain from ʿĀṣim ibn Ḍamrah from ʿAlī, and he is considered reliable by some scholars." I say: He is truthful as the ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb." Ibn al-Madīnī and others have deemed him trustworthy, and al-Nasāʾī said: "There is no harm in him," so his ḥadīth is good.
