it was recorded by al-Ṭayālisī (1222): Shuʿbah narrated to us, saying: Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād informed me of it. I said: This Ziyād is the Hāshimī, their client, and there is no harm in his narrations as supporting evidence and witnesses. Thirdly: al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah differed from them, saying: from Zayd ibn Wahb from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib from Thābit ibn Wadīʿah, adding al-Barāʾ in the isnād with the wording: that a man brought a lizard to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he said: "Indeed, a nation was transformed, and Allāh knows best." It was also recorded by al-Nasāʾī and al-Bukhārī, and al-Dārimī (2/92), and Ibn Abī Shaybah (8/267), and al-Bayhaqī, and al-Ṭayālisī (1220), and Aḥmad as well, all through various chains from Shuʿbah from him. ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsá differed from them, saying: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Ḥuṣayn from Zayd ibn Wahb from Ḥudhayfah in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Indeed, the lizard is a nation transformed into creatures on the earth." It was recorded by al-Bazzār (1215): Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyá narrated to us, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsá narrated to us. It has become clear to us from these narrations that they revolve around Zayd ibn Wahb (may Allāh have mercy on him), and that the narrators differed regarding his isnād and some of its wordings. As for the differences in the isnād, they can be summarized in the following four aspects: 1 - al-Aʿmash from Zayd ibn Wahb from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥasnah (may Allāh be pleased with him). 2 - ʿAdī ibn Thābit from Zayd ibn Wahb from Thābit ibn Wadāʿah or Wadīʿah (may Allāh be pleased with him). 3 - al-Ḥakam from Zayd ibn Wahb from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib from Thābit
