ʿUtbah ibn Ḥanẓalah said: I heard Ḥanẓalah ibn Ḥudhīm—my grandfather—say that his grandfather Ḥanīfah said to Ḥudhīm: Gather my children for me, for I wish to make a bequest. So he gathered them, and he said: The first thing I bequeath is that my orphan who is in my care shall have one hundred camels which we used to call in the pre-Islamic period (al-Muṭayyabah). Ḥudhīm said, O my father, I heard your children saying: We only acknowledge this in the presence of our father, and when he dies, we will retract it! He said: Between you and me is the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). Ḥudhīm said: We are content. So Ḥudhīm and Ḥanīfah set out, and Ḥanẓalah was with them as a boy, riding behind Ḥudhīm. When they came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), they greeted him, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "What brings you here, O Abū Ḥudhīm?" He said: This. And he struck Ḥudhīm's thigh with his hand, saying: I feared that old age or death might surprise me, so I wanted to bequeath that my orphan who is in my care shall have one hundred camels which we used to call in the pre-Islamic period (al-Muṭayyabah). The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) became angry, and we saw the anger in his face. He was sitting, but he knelt on his knees and said: (and he mentioned the ḥadīth) He said: So they took leave of him, and the orphan had a stick with which he was striking a camel. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "How great! This is the staff of an orphan!" Ḥanẓalah said: My father approached the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: I have sons with beards and others without, and this one is the youngest of them, so pray to Allāh for him. He wiped his head and said: "May Allāh bless you, or may you be blessed."
