the man: How are you? He replied: I praise Allāh to you. ʿUmar said: That is what I wanted from you. Its isnād is authentic, and likewise said al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī. Through the route of Mālik, it was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1132) and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (4/109/4450). It has also been narrated in a marfūʿ form through the route of Hammām ibn Yaḥyá and Ḥammād ibn Salamah, both from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah: that a man used to come to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and greet him, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would say: "How are you this morning?" He would reply: I praise Allāh to you, and I praise Allāh to you. So the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would pray for him. One day he came, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "How are you, O so-and-so?" He said: I am well if I am grateful! The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) remained silent, so the man said: O Prophet of Allāh! You used to ask me and then pray for me, but today you asked me and did not pray for me? He said: "I used to ask you and you would thank Allāh, but today I asked you and you doubted in gratitude." It was recorded by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in "al-Shukr" (28/38) and through his route by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (4/109/4449) from Hammām, and by Ibn al-Sunnī in "ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" (65/184) from Ḥammād. It has been narrated musnad, and Aḥmad said (3/241): Muʾammil informed us, Ḥammād, meaning Ibn Salamah, informed us: Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated from Anas ibn Mālik:
