Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Sarī al-ʿAsqalānī said: Rashdīn ibn Saʿd informed us from Zuhrah ibn Maʿbad from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr who said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to a man... and mentioned it, saying: "It is not narrated from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) except through this isnād, and Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Sarī is the only one who narrated it." I said: He is Muḥammad ibn al-Mutawakkil ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Hāshimī, their client, al-ʿAsqalānī, known as Ibn Abī al-Sarī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī said: "A reliable ḥāfiẓ, but Abū Ḥātim considered him weak." Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿAsqalānī said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful and knowledgeable, but he has many errors." I said: Someone like him can be used as evidence. Similarly, his teacher Rashdīn ibn Saʿd, and al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī criticized him, saying in "Takhrīj al-Iḥyāʾ" (4/84): "The majority weakened him due to his poor memory." His student al-Haythamī followed him, saying in "al-Majmaʿ" (8/46): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ', and Rashdīn ibn Saʿd is in it, and he is weak."
