and it was published along with its counterpart "Weak al-Adab al-Mufrad." All praise is due to Allāh, by whose grace righteous deeds are completed. Know that (hām) is the plural of (hāmah). Ibn al-Athīr said in "al-Nihāyah": "The hāmah is the head, and the name of a bird, which is intended in the ḥadīth. This is because they used to consider it an omen, and it is a bird of the night. It is said: it is the owl. It is also said: the Arabs used to claim that the soul of a murdered person whose revenge was not taken would become a hāmah, saying: 'Give me to drink,' and when revenge was taken, it would fly away..." On this occasion, I must point out two egregious errors that occurred with this term (hām) by some people, one of whom is a scholar, Shaykh Faḍl Allāh al-Jīlānī, in his commentary on the book "al-Adab al-Mufrad" by Imām al-Bukhārī, where it was altered in its text to (al-hawām)! In this, he followed the Indian edition of the year (1306 AH) (p. 131), then Shaykh al-Jīlānī further erred when he explained it by saying (2/367): "(al-hawām) is the plural of hām, the name of a bird from the birds of the night..." The correct view is that (hām) is the plural, and its singular is (hāmah) as in "al-Qāmūs" and other sources. As for (al-hawām), it is the plural of (al-hāmah), which is a creature, and every venomous creature that kills with its venom, as mentioned in the language books. The other error is what was committed by Zuhayr al-Shāwīsh, the owner of the Islamic Office, as he reprinted my aforementioned book "Weak al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr" in a second edition without my permission or knowledge, resulting in astonishing matters, strange alterations, and annotations that indicate a blatant infringement on its author and a dangerous claim to knowledge, and suffice it for me now..
