I say: it is very unlikely for someone like him to oppose the ḥadīth and the Companions, and to agree with the Khawārij in denying the sunnah of wiping over the leather socks, especially since he studied under his father Dāwūd. This is in agreement with the imams of fiqh and ḥadīth regarding the ruling of wiping over the leather socks, as mentioned by Imām Ibn Ḥazm in "al-Muḥallá" (2/89). So where did al-Sālimī get what he attributed to Abū Bakr al-Ẓāhirī?! And how excellent is what has been said: "Claims, unless you establish evidence for them, are merely the assertions of claimants!"

- "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came to us in our mosque at (Qubāʾ), and I came while I was a young boy [youth] and sat to his right, [and Abū Bakr sat to his left] then he called for a drink and drank from it, then gave it to me while I was on his right, so I drank from it, then he stood up to pray, and I saw him praying in his sandals." It was narrated by Aḥmad (4/221) and Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Waḥdān" (4/167/2148) through the route of Mujammaʿ ibn Yaʿqūb: Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl informed us, saying: It was said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥabībah ﵁: Did you meet the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? He said: and he mentioned it. I said: And this isnād is good, if Allāh wills, Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl was also narrated from by ʿĀṣim ibn Suwayd, the imam of the mosque of Qubāʾ, as in "al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl", and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (7/394) among the followers of the followers, and he also mentioned the two narrators mentioned from him: Mujammaʿ ibn Yaʿqūb and ʿĀṣim ibn Suwayd, and this is unusual from him, because it appears that Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl was a follower who met his grandfather from the maternal side of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥabībah. Therefore, Ibn al-Sakan said in his biography, meaning this ʿAbd Allāh as in "al-Iṣābah":
