from ʿAṭṭāf, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn al-Arqam, from his father, from his grandfather. It was recorded by Ibn Mandah and others, and this is the correct version." I said: It appears as "from his father" here, and I suspect it is a slip of the pen by the ḥāfiẓ, or an insertion by some copyists, as it is not mentioned in all the preceding sources, but rather it is "from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn al-Arqam, from his grandfather." And so it is in "al-Taʿjīl," where it is said: "He narrated from his grandfather, and he was a Companion. And from him, Yaḥyá ibn ʿImrān, there is some doubt." From this analysis, it is concluded that the chain of the ḥadīth revolves: firstly, around ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn al-Arqam from his grandfather al-Arqam. Secondly, that ʿAṭṭāf ibn Khālid narrated it from him sometimes directly without an intermediary, but with an ambiguous chain not mentioning hearing, and sometimes he narrated it through Yaḥyá ibn ʿImrān from him. And he was followed in this. Accordingly, we can say: The ḥadīth is indeed from the narration of Yaḥyá ibn ʿImrān from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān from his grandfather al-Arqam. Thus, it becomes clear to us that there are two issues in this isnād: firstly, this ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān is only known from this narration, and he was mentioned by al-Bukhārī and Ibn Abī Ḥātim in their books from the narration of ʿAṭṭāf, without mentioning any criticism or endorsement, but al-Bukhārī mentioned him inversely: "ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Arqam"! This is how it appeared in the narration of al-Ṭabarānī and al-Ḥākim mentioned earlier, and Ibn Abī Ḥātim repeated it! This confirms that the man is unknown, and it is surprising that he is not mentioned in "al-Mīzān" or "al-Lisān." Even more surprising is the mention by Ibn Ḥibbān
عن عطاف عن عبد الله بن عثمان بن الأرقم عن أبيه، عن جده. أخرجه ابن منده وغيره، وهو الصواب ". قلت: كذا وقع فيه: " عن أبيه "، وأظنه سبق قلم من الحافظ، أو مقحما من بعض النساخ، فإنه لم يذكر في كل المصادر المتقدمة، وإنما هو " عن عبد الله بن عثمان بن الأرقم عن جده ". وهكذا هو في " التعجيل " قال: " روى عن جده، وله صحبة. وعنه يحيى بن عمران، فيه نظر ". ويتلخص من هذا التخريج أن سند الحديث يدور: أولا: على عبد الله بن عثمان بن الأرقم عن جده الأرقم. وثانيا: أن العطاف بن خالد رواه عنه تارة مباشرة بدون واسطة، ولكن معنعنا لم يذكر السماع، وتارة رواه بواسطة يحيى بن عمران عنه. وقد توبع على هذه. وعليه فنستطيع أن نقول: إن الحديث إنما هو من رواية يحيى بن عمران عن عبد الله ابن عثمان عن جده الأرقم. وحينئذ يتحرر معنا أن في هذا الإسناد علتين: الأولى: عبد الله بن عثمان هذا، لا يعرف إلا في هذه الرواية، وقد أورده البخاري وابن أبي حاتم في كتابيهما من رواية عطاف، ولم يذكرا فيه جرحا ولا تعديلا، لكن البخاري ذكره على القلب: " عثمان بن عبد الله بن الأرقم "! وهكذا وقع في رواية الطبراني والحاكم المتقدمة، وكذلك أعاده ابن أبي حاتم! وهذا مما يؤكد أن الرجل غير معروف، فمن المستغرب عدم ذكره في " الميزان "، ولا في " اللسان ". وأغرب منه ذكر ابن حبان
