356) from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from his father, who witnessed a funeral prayer led by Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam. Abū Hurayrah went with Marwān until they sat in the cemetery. Then Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī came and said to Marwān, "Show me your hand," so he gave him his hand. He said, "Stand up," and he stood up. Then Marwān said to Abū Saʿīd, "Why did you make me stand?" He said, "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to stand when he saw a funeral until it passed by," and he mentioned it. Marwān said, "Is this true, Abū Hurayrah?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then why did you not tell me?" He said, "I was an imam, so I sat, and you sat." I said: Its chain is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim. Al-Ḥākim said the same. Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I chose to include the ḥadīth here, even though it was previously mentioned briefly under number (2017) from the narration of Ibn Mājah and Aḥmad, because in this narration, Abū Hurayrah confirms Abū Saʿīd. It was previously cited from the ḥadīth of Jābir in the narration of Muslim and others. I add here that it was also narrated by ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd in "al-Muntakhab min Musnadihi" (p. 151/2), Ibn Ḥibbān (3939 - al-Iḥsān), and Ibn ʿAdī (p. 188/2). The ḥadīth has been narrated with an addition in its text, saying: "Indeed, death causes panic. When one of you faces the death of his brother, let him say: * 'Indeed, we belong to Allāh, and indeed to Him we will return' *, * 'and indeed to our Lord we will return' *. O Allāh, write him among the righteous, place his record in ʿIlliyyīn, and succeed his descendants among the later generations. O Allāh, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not test us after him." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī (3/163/1) through two chains from Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ from Abū Hāshim al-Rummānī from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās, raised [to the Prophet].
