he was cauterized seven times, and we came to visit him. He said: If I had not heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say, "Do not wish for death," I would have wished for it. And he was repairing a wall of his and said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say, and he mentioned it. Ibn Ḥibbān also narrated it from this perspective (5/99-100) without the wishing [for death]. I say: This is a rare authentic isnād, and it meets the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Al-Bukhārī included it in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (5672) and "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (455), Aḥmad (5/110), al-Ḥumaydī (154), and from him al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (4/70/3633), as well as Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (1/146) and al-Ṭabarānī also (3635) through various chains from Ismāʿīl, stopping at Khabbāb. I say: This is more authentic, but I consider it to be effectively raised [to the Prophet], especially since it has been explicitly raised in some routes, corroborations, and supporting narrations. I will mention what is available to me: Firstly, from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid from him from Khabbāb who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "Every expenditure a servant spends, he is rewarded for it except for building." Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (4/73/3641) with a sound chain from Ibn ʿAyyāsh, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy except for Ibn ʿAyyāsh, who was weakened in his narrations from non-Shāmīs, and this is one of them, as Ibn Abī Khālid is Kūfan. Thus, his narration is accepted in corroborations and supporting narrations. Secondly, from ʿUmar ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Mujālid: My father narrated to us from Bayān ibn Bishr and Ibn Abī Mujālid from him, and his wording is: "A Muslim is rewarded for all his expenditures except what he places in the ground." Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it (3645)
اكتوى سبع كيات، فأتيناه نعوده، فقال: لولا أني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "لا تتمنوا الموت" لتمنيته، وإذا هو يصلح حائطا له فقال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: فذكره. ومن هذا الوجه أخرجه ابن حبان (٥ / ٩٩ - ١٠٠) دون التمني. قلت: وهذا إسناد صحيح عزيز، وهو على شرط الشيخين، وقد أخرجه البخاري في "صحيحه" (٥٦٧٢) و"الأدب المفرد" (٤٥٥) وأحمد (٥ / ١١٠) والحميدي (١٥٤) وعنه الطبراني في "المعجم الكبير" (٤ / ٧٠ / ٣٦٣٣) وكذا أبو نعيم في "الحلية" (١ / ١٤٦) والطبراني أيضا (٣٦٣٥) من طرق عن إسماعيل به موقوفا على خباب. قلت: وهو أصح، ولكني أرى أنه في حكم المرفوع، وبخاصة أنه قد جاء مرفوعا صراحة في بعض الطرق والمتابعات والشواهد، فأذكر ما تيسر لي منها: أولا: عن إسماعيل بن عياش عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد به عن خباب قال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "كل نفقة ينفقها العبد يؤجر فيها إلا البنيان". أخرجه الطبراني في "المعجم الكبير" (٤ / ٧٣ / ٣٦٤١) بسند صحيح عن ابن عياش، وسائره ثقات إلا ابن عياش، فقد ضعفوه في روايته عن غير الشاميين وهذه منها، فإن ابن أبي خالد كوفي، فمثله تقبل روايته في المتابعات والشواهد. ثانيا: عن عمر بن إسماعيل بن مجالد: حدثنا أبي عن بيان بن بشر وابن أبي مجالد به، ولفظه: "إن المسلم يؤجر في نفقته كلها إلا ما يجعله في التراب". أخرجه الطبراني أيضا (٣٦٤٥).
