that he used to command that charity should only be given to the people of Islam until this verse was revealed: * "Their guidance is not your responsibility" * to the end of it, after which he commanded charity to be given to anyone who asked you (1) from any religion. He attributed it by mentioning Ibn ʿAbbās. It was recorded by Ibn Abī Ḥātim in "al-Tafsīr" (1/211/2) who said: Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim ibn ʿAṭiyyah narrated to us: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—meaning: al-Dashtakī—narrated to me: my father narrated to me from his father with it. I said: Ibn Kathīr transmitted it in his "Tafsīr" and remained silent about it, and its chain is good; all its men are from the men of "al-Tahdhīb" except Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim ibn ʿAṭiyyah. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (1/67): "He is known as Abū Bakr ibn al-Qāsim al-Ḥāfiẓ. He narrated from Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī, and we wrote from him, and he is truthful and reliable." Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīrah was followed by Jaʿfar ibn Iyas from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: "There were people who had relatives and kin from the Banū Qurayẓah and al-Naḍīr, and they used to refrain from giving charity to them, wanting them to embrace Islam. Then was revealed * 'Their guidance is not your responsibility, but Allāh guides whom He wills, and whatever good you spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the face of Allāh. And whatever good you spend will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged' * (Sūrat al-Baqarah, 272)."
