"Whoever says two hundred times in a day [one hundred in the morning and one hundred in the evening]: 'There is no deity but Allāh alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise, and He is over all things powerful,' no one before him will surpass him, and no one after him will reach him except someone who does better than his deeds." It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī in "al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" (576 and 577), as well as Ibn al-Sunnī (73) and Ibn al-Aʿrābī in "al-Muʿjam" (Q 216/1) and al-Ḥākim (1/500) who said: "One hundred!" and Aḥmad (2/185 and 214) and al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (3/25) through various chains from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is good due to the well-known disagreement regarding ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather, and thus it is said in "al-Fatḥ" (11/202): "Its isnād is authentic up to ʿAmr." Al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (10/86): "It was narrated by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī, except that he said: 'every day,' and the men of Aḥmad are trustworthy, but among the men of al-Ṭabarānī there are those I do not know." I say: The intent of the ḥadīth is not that one should say the two hundred times at once, as some contemporaries who authored works on the "Sunnah of the rosary" might assume! Rather, it is to divide them between morning and evening, as this is explicitly mentioned in the narration of Shuʿbah from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, with the wording: "Whoever says... one hundred times in the morning, and one hundred times in the evening..."
