their claim is false because it is usually impossible to associate with them and live with them in a way that reveals their righteousness or wickedness. We know from experience that many of those with whom you have the closest companionship among humans turn out to be unsuitable. Allāh, the Exalted, said: "O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them" (Sūrah al-Taghābun, 14). This is regarding visible humans, so what about the jinn, about whom Allāh, the Exalted, said: "Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them" (Sūrah al-Aʿrāf, 27).

There was a Jewish man who used to visit the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he trusted him. The man tied a knot for him and placed it in the well of a man from the Anṣār, which caused him to suffer for several days. In the narration of ʿĀʾishah: six months. Two angels came to visit him, one sat by his head and the other by his feet. One of them said: Do you know what his ailment is? He said: It is so-and-so who used to visit him, who tied a knot for him and threw it in the well of so-and-so the Anṣārī. If he sends someone to retrieve it, he will find the water has turned yellow. Jibrīl came to him and revealed to him the two protective sūrahs, and said: A man from the Jews has bewitched you, and the magic is in the well of so-and-so. So he sent a man, and in another narration: he sent ʿAlī (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), who found the water had turned yellow, took the knot, and brought it. He was instructed to untie the knot and recite a verse. As he untied it, he recited, and with each knot untied, he felt relief until he was cured. In another narration: the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stood up as if he had been released from shackles. After that, the man continued to visit the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who never mentioned anything about it to him, nor did he ever reproach him until he died
