I set out with ʿAmr ibn Ṣulayʿ until we came to Ḥudhayfah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: "This ḥadīth is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. It has two other chains, rather three: the first is from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Tharwān (1) from ʿAmr ibn Ḥanẓalah who said: Ḥudhayfah said: "By Allāh, Muḍar will not leave a believing servant of Allāh except they will test him or kill him, or Allāh, the angels, and the believers will strike them, until they do not prevent the tail of a lizard." A man said to him: Do you say this, O ʿAbdullāh! And you are a man from Muḍar? He said: I only say what the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said. It was narrated by Aḥmad (5/395) and Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (15/111/19249) and through his chain by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" (2/110/2/6727) from the chain of ʿAbdullāh ibn Numayr: al-Aʿmash narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Tharwān with it. Al-Ṭabarānī said: "No one narrated it from al-Aʿmash except ʿAbdullāh ibn Numayr." I say: He is trustworthy from the men of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, as are those above him except ʿAmr ibn Ḥanẓalah. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taʿjīl": "Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy, and Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned him without any criticism." I say: I did not see him among the followers in "Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān" - the India edition verified by al-Afghānī, so I said: Perhaps he mentioned him among the followers of the followers, because he did not explicitly state hearing from Ḥudhayfah, so I returned to the photographed copy I have and did not find him among them either (2)
