- "He forbade urinating at the doors of mosques." It was recorded by Ibn Shabbah in "Tārīkh al-Madīnah" (1/36) through the route of Ibn Jābir, who heard Makhūl (may Allāh have mercy on him) say it, and he mentioned it as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I say: Its isnād is authentic, its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of Muslim, except that it is mursal, because Makhūl is a Syrian tābiʿī. However, it has a corroborating narration from the mursal of Abū Majlaz: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) instructed ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) not to allow anyone to urinate towards the qiblah of the mosque. It was also recorded by Ibn Shabbah, and its isnād is also authentic. These two mursal narrations were also recorded by Abū Dāwūd in "al-Marāsīl" (3) and (14), and only he attributed them to al-Suyūṭī in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr," but the second of them is with the wording: "He forbade urinating towards the qiblah of the mosque." Al-Munāwī critiqued it by saying: "The wording of Abū Dāwūd from Abū Majlaz is that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) instructed ʿUmar to forbid urinating towards the qiblah of the mosque." I say: And this is its wording in "al-Marāsīl" of Abū Dāwūd printed under this title (p. 4), and it is in reality "Mukhtaṣar al-Marāsīl" because the isnāds are omitted, and even the texts, including this ḥadīth of Makhūl, are not included.
