it was in the conquest of Jerusalem, not Jericho, as we mentioned. "In the strange ḥadīth (a woman's part)." The ḥāfiẓ said: "With the bāʾ having a ḍammah and the mīm being silent, the term 'part' can refer to the private parts, marriage, and intercourse, and all three meanings are appropriate here. It can also refer to the dowry and divorce." (And he had not yet consummated the marriage with her) meaning he had not entered upon her, but the expression 'not yet' implies the expectation of that. (Pregnant camels) with the mīm having a fatḥah and the lām being kasrah, followed by a light fāʾ, is the plural of (pregnant camel), which refers to a pregnant she-camel, and it may also apply to animals other than camels. (Hold it for a while) is in the accusative case as a verbal noun, meaning for the amount of time our need for conquering the town requires. ʿIyāḍ said, there is a difference of opinion regarding the stopping of the sun here. It was said: it was returned to its previous position, it was said: it stopped, and it was said: its movement slowed. All of that is possible, and the third opinion is preferred by Ibn Baṭṭāl and others. I say: whichever is preferred, the apparent meaning of the stopping is that the purpose was for the Prophet Joshua and his people to be able to pray the afternoon prayer before sunset. However, this is not the intended purpose; rather, the purpose was to enable the conquest before nightfall, because the conquest was on a Friday. When night fell, Saturday began, on which Allāh had forbidden them to work. This is if what Ibn Kathīr mentioned about the People of the Book is correct: "They mentioned that he finished besieging it on Friday after the afternoon, and when the sun set or was about to set, Saturday would begin for them, which was made obligatory for them at that time... and Allāh knows best."
