in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (951), al-Bayhaqī (3/153), Ibn Ḥibbān (4/185/2744), Aḥmad (1/290 and 337), Abū ʿAwānah, and al-Ṭaḥāwī (1/245). Al-Bayhaqī's wording is: "How many [units of prayer] should I perform if I miss the prayer in al-Masjid al-Ḥarām? ..." and the rest is similar. Third: Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah reported something similar from him. It was recorded by Muslim (3/144), al-Nasāʾī, and Aḥmad (1/369). Fourth: Hishām al-Dastawāʾī. Al-Ṭayālisī said in his "Musnad" (2742): Hishām narrated to us from him with it. His wording is: I said to Ibn ʿAbbās: If I do not catch the prayer in al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, how many [units] should I pray at (al-Baṭḥāʾ)? He said: Two units... etc. It was also recorded by Aḥmad (1/226): Yaḥyá narrated to us from Hishām with it. Fifth: Hammām: Qatādah informed us with it, similar to the wording of Hishām. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/290). Qatādah explicitly stated the transmission from him in the narration of Shuʿbah. I said: The ḥadīth clearly indicates that the sunnah for a traveler, if he follows a resident [in prayer], is to complete the prayer and not shorten it. This is the opinion of the four imams and others. Indeed, Imām al-Shāfiʿī in "al-Umm" (1/159) reported the consensus of the general scholars on this, and it was transmitted by al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar from him in "al-Fatḥ" (2/465) and he affirmed it.
