"he said: As for us, did we not ask about that [from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)]? He said: ...", and the Messenger (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) added to it, and it is possible that this addition is in some of the old copies of "Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim". And Allāh knows best.
