his companionship, and his statement in "The Work of the Day": (ʿUqbah) I think it is a scribal error. Correctly, Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned it at the end of his book "al-Kalim al-Ṭayyib" without attributing it to Aḥmad, and I attributed it in the commentary to Abū Dāwūd, but it is more appropriate to attribute it to Ibn al-Sunnī because its wording matches his. And Allāh knows best. ʿAbd al-Razzāq also reported it (10/406/19512) from Maʿmar from al-Aʿmash that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: then he mentioned it. This is a sound but interrupted chain.
صحبته، وقوله في "عمل اليوم": (عقبة) أظنه محرفا من بعض النساخ. وعلى الصواب ذكره شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية في آخر كتابه "الكلم الطيب" دون أن يعزوه لأحمد، وكنت عزوته في التعليق عليه لأبي داود، والأولى أن يعزى لابن السني لأن لفظه مطابق للفظه. والله أعلم. وأخرجه عبد الرزاق (١٠ / ٤٠٦ / ١٩٥١٢) عن معمر عن الأعمش أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: فذكره. وهذا صحيح معضل.
"Would it not please you if Allāh admitted you to Paradise to find him at one of its gates opening it for you? Meaning his young son." It was narrated by Ibn Saʿd (7/32-33): ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar al-Raqī informed us, saying: ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿAmr narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr from Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah from his uncle that he used to bring his son to the Prophet and seat him before him. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "Do you love him?" He said: Yes, with intense love. Then the boy died, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "It seems you are saddened by him?" He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allāh. Then he mentioned it. He said: Indeed. The Prophet said: "Then it is so, if Allāh wills." I said: This isnād [chain of transmission] consists of narrators all of whom are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs, but I was troubled by his saying: "from his uncle," as it initially occurred to me that it might be a scribal error for "from his father," as it is in "al-Musnad" and "Sunan al-Nasāʾī" with two isnāds from Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah, and both are more authentic than this. However, it seems there is no error, as Ibn Saʿd included it in the biography of (the brother of Qurrah ibn Iyās), so it appears to be a mistake from one of its narrators, and it is from one of the two ʿAbds: Ibn Jaʿfar or Ibn ʿUmayr, as both had changes in their memory. Furthermore, the wording of the ḥadīth in one of al-Nasāʾī's narrations is more complete, so refer to it if you wish in "Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz" (p. 162).
"أفما يسرك إذا أدخلك الله الجنة أن تجده على باب من أبوابها فيفتحه لك. يعني ابنه الصغير". رواه ابن سعد (٧ / ٣٢ - ٣٣): أخبرنا عبد الله بن جعفر الرقي قال: حدثنا عبيد الله بن عمرو عن عبد الملك بن عمير عن معاوية بن قرة عن عمه أنه كان يأتي النبي بابنه فيجلسه بين يديه، فقال له النبي ﷺ: "تحبه؟" قال: نعم حبا شديدا، قال: ثم إن الغلام مات، فقال له النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: "كأنك حزنت عليه؟" قال: أجل يا رسول الله، قال: فذكره. قال: بلى، قال: "فإنه كذلك إن شاء الله". قلت: وهذا إسناد رجاله كلهم ثقات رجال الشيخين، لكن رابني منه قوله: "عن عمه"، وقد تبادر لذهني أول الأمر أنه لعله محرف من "عن أبيه"، فإنه هكذا في "المسند" و"سنن النسائي" بإسنادين عن معاوية بن قرة، وكلاهما أصح من هذا. ولكن يبدو أنه لا تحريف، فإن ابن سعد أورده في ترجمة (أخو قرة بن إياس) فالظاهر أنه وهم من بعض رواته، وهو من أحد العبدين: ابن جعفر، أو ابن عمير، فإن كلاهما كان تغير حفظه. ثم إن لفظ الحديث عند النسائي في إحدى روايتيه أتم، فراجعه إن شئت في "أحكام الجنائز" (ص ١٦٢).
