I said: "O Messenger of Allāh, I am a woman who braids her hair tightly. Should I undo it for the ritual bath of major impurity?" He said: "No, it is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head and then pour water over yourself, and you will be purified."

"No, it is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head and then pour water over yourself, and you will be purified." It was narrated by Muslim (no. 178), the four authors of the Sunan, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Laḥyānī in "His Ḥadīth" (p. 123/1), Ibn Abī Shaybah, al-Bayhaqī (1/181), and Aḥmad (6/289 and 314-315) through the chain of Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn ʿUyaynah—this is his wording—Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, and Ayyūb (who is al-Sakhtiyānī) from Ayyūb ibn Mūsá from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rāfiʿ, the freed slave of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah who said: and he mentioned it. It was also narrated from al-Thawrī by two trustworthy narrators, Yazīd ibn Hārūn and ʿAbd al-Razzāq ibn Hammām, who differed in their narrations. The first narrated it like the narration of Ibn ʿUyaynah, and the latter said in his ḥadīth, "Should I undo it for menstruation and major impurity?" He added (and major impurity), so I see this as an anomalous addition because ʿAbd al-Razzāq was alone in narrating it from Sufyān al-Thawrī without Yazīd ibn Hārūn, and the narration of the latter is more reliable as it agrees with the wording of Ibn ʿUyaynah, Rūḥ ibn al-Qāsim, and al-Sakhtiyānī. And Allāh knows best. Ibn al-Qayyim elaborated in "al-Tahdhīb" on the anomaly of this addition, so whoever wishes to verify this should refer to it (1/167).
