then I found a corroborating narrator for him. Aḥmad said in the mentioned place: Ḥasan narrated to us, Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, Abū ʿAshānah narrated to us with a narration similar to that of ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith: thus, the ḥadīth is authentic in my view, without any doubt. All praise is due to Allāh, by whose grace righteous deeds are completed.

"Where have you gone?! It is only, O you who have believed, those who have gone astray - from the disbelievers - will not harm you if you are guided." It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/129 and 201-202) through the route of ʿAlī ibn Mudrak from Abū ʿĀmir al-Ashʿarī who said: A man was killed among them at (Awṭās), so the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: O Abū ʿĀmir, why did you not change? (1) Then he recited this verse: *O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are guided* (Sūrat al-Māʾidah, 105), and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) became angry and mentioned it. It was also narrated by al-Ṭabarānī with the wording: from Abū ʿĀmir that there was something among them, so he stayed away from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: What kept you? He said: I recited this verse: *O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are guided*, and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "Those who have gone astray from the disbelievers will not harm you if you are guided." Al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (7/19): "And their narrators are trustworthy, except that I did not find for ʿAlī ibn Mudrak any hearing from any of the Companions." I say: It was hidden from him that Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "Thiqāt al-Tābiʿīn", and he said (3/180): "He heard from Abū Masʿūd, a Companion of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj narrated from him. He died in the year one hundred and twenty."
