and the ḥadīth has been narrated similarly from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sayyid as a marfūʿ report with a weak isnād, and from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd as a mawqūf report with a sound isnād. Its extraction will come under number (3189).

- "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to Jibrīl (ʿalayhi al-salām): Why have I never seen Mīkāʾīl laughing? He said: Mīkāʾīl has not laughed since the fire was created." It was recorded by al-Ruyānī in "his Musnad" (folio 247 / 2): Muḥammad ibn Bashshār informed us, Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān informed us, Thawr ibn Yazīd informed us from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿĀʾidh from Mujāhid from Ibn ʿUmar from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and he might not have raised it - he said: so he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is sound, its men are trustworthy, the men of al-Bukhārī except for ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿĀʾidh, and he is trustworthy as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb". The ḥadīth was also recorded by al-Ḥākim (2 / 80 - 81) and from him by al-Bayhaqī (9 / 149) through the route of Musaddad: Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd narrated it with the same isnād except that he did not say: "and he might not have raised it." Al-Ḥākim said: "Sound according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī"! and al-Dhahabī agreed with him! This is among their errors due to the aforementioned exception, and al-Mundhirī also acknowledged it (2 / 154)! Then al-Ḥākim said: "Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ narrated it mawqūf from Thawr, and in Yaḥyá ibn Saʿīd there is a model." I say: It is as he said, but Yaḥyá mentioned that the narrator - perhaps Ibn ʿUmar or someone below him - might not have raised it, which does not harm because the narrator might not be energetic at times and stops it, and because it is not said from personal opinion as is apparent. (Note): "The guardian of the guards" is how it appeared in "the Musnad" and in the other two sources: "guardian of guards" and perhaps that is correct, for it is likewise in "Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah" (5 / 296): Wakīʿ narrated to us, Thawr informed us with it mawqūf. And it is likewise in "al-Targhīb". And Allāh knows best.
