ʿĀzib, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās, and Sahl ibn Ḥunayf. 1 - As for the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, it has two chains: the first is from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from his father from him, mentioning it similarly with the wording: "giving preference to the questioner, returning the greeting, lowering the gaze, enjoining good, and forbidding evil." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1049). I say: Its isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim. The other chain is from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq from Saʿīd al-Maqburī from him with the wording: "lowering the gaze, guiding the traveler, responding to the sneezer when he praises Allāh, and returning the greeting." It was also recorded by al-Bukhārī (1014), Abū Dāwūd (4816), and Ibn Ḥibbān (595). Its isnād is good according to the criteria of Muslim. 2 - As for the ḥadīth of al-Barāʾ, it is narrated by Shuʿbah and others from Abū Isḥāq from him—though he did not hear it from him—similarly with the wording: "return the greeting, help the oppressed, and guide the way." It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2727), al-Dārimī (2/282), Ibn Ḥibbān (596), al-Ṭaḥāwī, and Aḥmad (4/282, 291, 393, 304). Al-Tirmidhī said: "It is a ḥasan ḥadīth."
