it was also recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (2539) and Aḥmad (3/487) through various chains from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Abū Ḥarb ibn Abī al-Aswad, from him, who said: "I came to Medina without any acquaintance there, so I stayed at the Ṣuffah with a man. Every day, we shared a measure of dates between us. One day, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prayed, and when he finished, a man from the people of the Ṣuffah said: 'O Messenger of Allāh! The dates have burned our stomachs, and the skin has worn off us!' The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) then ascended and delivered a sermon, saying: 'By Allāh, if I had bread or meat, I would have fed you. Indeed, you are close to a time when those of you who reach it will have bowls brought to you and you will wear garments like the coverings of the Kaʿbah.'" He said: "My companion and I stayed for eighteen days and nights with nothing to eat but al-barīr, until we went to our brothers, the Anṣār, who shared with us, and the best thing we received was these dates." The narration is from Aḥmad, and it is more complete. Its chain is authentic, and its narrators are those of Muslim. Al-Haythamī said (10/322-323): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and al-Bazzār in a similar manner... and the narrators of al-Bazzār are the narrators of the authentic collections, except for Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān al-ʿAqīlī, who is trustworthy." I said: This is an oversight, as it was also narrated by Aḥmad, and it was necessary to attribute it to him, especially since all its narrators are those of the authentic collections. There is another supporting ḥadīth from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Khaṭmī, that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Are you better today or when a plate is brought to one of you in the morning and another in the evening, and you wear one garment in the morning and another in the evening, and you adorn your houses as the Kaʿbah is adorned?" A man said: "Are we better then?" He said: "Rather, you are better today." Al-Haythamī said:
