- "When Moses met al-Khiḍr (peace be upon him), a bird came and dipped its beak into the water. Al-Khiḍr said to Moses: Do you know what this bird is saying? He said: And what does it say? He said: It says: Your knowledge and the knowledge of Moses in comparison to the knowledge of Allāh is only like what my beak has taken from the water." It was narrated by al-Ḥākim (2/369): Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Bālawayh narrated to us, Abū ʿImrān Mūsá ibn Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī narrated to us, Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) who said: Ubayy ibn Kaʿb narrated to me that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. And he said: "Authentic according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and al-Suyūṭī affirmed it in "al-Durr al-Manthūr" (4/234). And I say: It is only according to the condition of Muslim alone, for Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī and Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh - who is al-Ḥammāl - were not relied upon by al-Bukhārī. As for Mūsá ibn Hārūn and Ibn Bālawayh, they are not among their narrators, and Mūsá is a trustworthy, great ḥāfiẓ as the ḥāfiẓ said and mentioned him for distinction. As for Ibn Bālawayh, al-Khaṭīb translated him (1/282) and said: "Abū Bakr al-Burqānī narrated from him, and I asked him about him? He said: "Trustworthy." He died in the year 374 AH. And he was ninety-four years old." The ḥadīth is a part of the story of al-Khiḍr with Moses (peace be upon them) in "the two Ṣaḥīḥs," and "Zawāʾid Aḥmad" (5/117-118) but they did not have this part in its entirety, and therefore I extracted it.
