- "A servant does not truly believe until he believes in predestination, its good and its bad, until he knows that what befell him was not going to miss him, and what missed him was not going to befall him." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (2/21) and Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (217/1) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maimūn from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad from his father from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh as marfūʿ. Al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a strange ḥadīth; we do not know it except through the narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maimūn, and he is considered unreliable in ḥadīth." I say: However, the ḥadīth is authentic, as it appears in parts in other ḥadīths: the first: from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather as marfūʿ up to the words: "its good and its bad." Narrated by al-Ājurī in "al-Sharīʿah" (p. 188), Abū al-Ḥasan al-Qazwīnī in "Majlis min al-Amālī" (198/1), al-Lālakāʾī in "al-Sunnah" (1/141/2), and Abū Saʿd al-Janzarūdī in the "tenth" of "Aḥādīth Hishām ibn ʿAmmār" (5/2) from various chains. I say: And this isnād is ḥasan. The second: from ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār from Shaddād from Ibn ʿUmar as marfūʿ with similar wording. Narrated by al-Lālakāʾī. The third: from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī al-Ḥakam al-Thaqafī who said: Ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated to me from his father from Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī as marfūʿ with it.
