and its chain of transmission is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim. Muslim ibn Ṣafwān differed, saying: from Ṣafiyyah as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (4064) and al-Tirmidhī (2185), who authenticated it. It was narrated by al-Dalānī from ʿAmr ibn Murrah from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd from his brother, who said: Ibn Abī Rabīʿah narrated to me from Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar as a marfūʿ ḥadīth similar to it with the wording: "... the first and the last of them were swallowed up, and the middle of them did not survive. I said: What if there are believers among them? He said: They will become graves for them." It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī. I said: al-Dalānī—whose name is Yazīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—is weak. The ḥāfiẓ said: "He is truthful but makes many mistakes, and he used to practice tadlīs." I said: I found the phrase "the graves" objectionable, and what is preserved in "Muslim" and others is from the ḥadīth of Umm Salamah as a marfūʿ ḥadīth similar to the ḥadīth of the chapter, in which she said: "I said: O Messenger of Allāh! What about those who were unwilling? He said: They will be swallowed up with them, but they will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment according to their intentions." (Benefit): Know that there is no contradiction between this ḥadīth and the previous ḥadīth (2427): "Makkah will not be attacked until the Day of Judgment" because the affirmation of the attack in this one is different from the negation in that one. Do you not see Sufyān's explanation of it by saying: "They will never disbelieve, nor will they be attacked for disbelief." This is supported by his statement in this ḥadīth: "A part of their army will be swallowed up."
