"None of you should drink while standing." Narrated by Muslim (6/110-111) from ʿUmar ibn Ḥamzah, who informed me that Abū Ghaṭafān al-Marī heard Abū Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said this. And he added: "Whoever forgets should induce vomiting." I said: Although Muslim used ʿUmar as evidence, Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, al-Nasāʾī, and others weakened him, which is why al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Weak," so the ḥadīth with this addition is weak. However, it is authentic in another wording, which is why I presented it here without the addition. Abū Ziyād al-Ṭaḥḥān narrated that he heard Abū Hurayrah say, regarding the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): that he saw a man drinking while standing and said to him: "Vomit." He asked, "Why?" He said, "Would you be pleased if a cat drank with you?" He replied, "No." He said, "Then someone worse than that has drunk with you—the devil!" Narrated by Aḥmad (7990), al-Dārimī (2/121), and al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (3/19) from Shuʿbah from Abū Ziyād with this chain. This is a sound chain; its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs, except for Abū Ziyād. Ibn Maʿīn said he is trustworthy. Abū Ḥātim said: "A righteous shaykh in ḥadīth," as in "al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl" (4/2/373), so al-Dhahabī's statement about him being "unknown" is not to be considered after these two imams authenticated him. The ḥadīth also came in another wording: "If the one who drinks while standing knew what was in his stomach, he would induce vomiting."
