It was recorded by Abū Nuʿaym in "Akhbār Aṣbahān" (1/123) from Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shaʿrānī from him. And Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik—he is Abū Jābir al-Azdī al-Baṣrī—Abū Ḥātim said: "I encountered him, and he is not strong." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (9/64). And Isḥāq ibn Sayyār—who is al-Naṣībī Abū Yaʿqūb—ibn Abī Ḥātim said (1/1/223): "We encountered him, and he wrote to me some of his ḥadīth, and he was truthful and reliable." And Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shaʿrānī, his name is Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Zāhid al-Jammāl, and in his biography, Abū Nuʿaym narrated the ḥadīth and said: "He was among the devout who desired to perform ḥajj, and he used to pray two rakʿahs at every mile!" I say: This prayer is an innovation not practiced by the predecessors, and their leader is the Master of the Prophets (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), "and the best guidance is the guidance of Muḥammad." No criticism or commendation was mentioned about him, so the man is obscure. In summary, the ḥadīth, in my view, is ḥasan due to the combination of the two chains, especially since there is a supporting narration similar to it, so refer to it under number (636).

- "Whoever races horses on the day of the competition is not from us."
