- "Whoever among you is able to have a hidden store of good deeds, let him do so." It was recorded by al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (11/263) from ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sarī ibn Sahl al-Warrāq, who narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, who narrated to us from Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl al-Ṭālaqānī, who narrated to us from Muḥammad ibn Faḍīl ibn Ghazwān, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. And he [al-Khaṭīb] said: Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Fawāris said: "This ʿUmar was very confused in ḥadīth, claiming what he did not hear, and concocting." And Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-Furāt said: "He memorized a good portion of ḥadīth, and I wrote a lot, then his books were lost except for a little, and he narrated from al-Bāghandī ḥadīths that have no basis, and he was of a poor school of thought." I say: Those above him among the narrators are all trustworthy, but al-Dāraquṭnī criticized it for another reason, indicating by his action that ʿUmar al-Warrāq was not alone in this narration, for he said: "Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl raised it, and no one followed him in that, and it was narrated by Shuʿbah, Zuhayr, al-Qaṭṭān, Hushaym, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Abū Muʿāwiyah, ʿAbdah, and Muḥammad ibn Ziyād from Ismāʿīl from Qays from al-Zubayr as a mawqūf narration, and that is the correct version." This was transmitted by al-Munāwī from Ibn al-Jawzī, in the explanation of the ḥadīth, and he attributed its origin—I mean "al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr"—to the narration of al-Ḍiyāʾ from al-Zubayr, meaning as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I say: I have referred back to "al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah" and found that it was recorded there (1/296) through two other chains from Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. Thus, what I sensed from al-Dāraquṭnī's action was confirmed, and all praise is due to Allāh
