"The example of the believer is like a tender plant of the crop that the wind bends from one side to another, and the example of the hypocrite is like a cedar tree that stands firm on the ground until it is uprooted once." Narrated by al-Bukhārī (4/40), Muslim (8/136), al-Dārimī (2/310), Aḥmad (3/454), and Abū ʿUbayd in "al-Gharīb" (18/1) from Sufyān from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, who said Ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik narrated to me from his father from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) with it. It was also narrated by al-Ḥarbī (5/203/1) in a shortened form, who said: "I heard Ibn al-Aʿrābī say: 'The one who stands on his feet and the one who kneels on his knees. And he knelt on his knees, which is standing upright.'" It was also narrated by Aḥmad (2/523) and the two Shaykhs from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah in a raised form with its meaning. Aḥmad also narrated (3/349, 387, and 394-395) from Ibn Lahīʿah, who said Abū al-Zubayr narrated to us from Jābir in a raised form with the wording: "The example of the believer is like an ear of grain that stands upright at times and bends at times, and the example of the disbeliever is like a cedar that remains upright until it falls without realizing." This isnād is weak. However, it was narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir in "al-Tārīkh" (1/268 - printed by the Majmaʿ) through the route of Ibn Wahb, who informed me from Ibn Lahīʿah with it.
