"What do you want from ʿAlī? Indeed, ʿAlī is from me, and I am from him, and he is the ally of every believer after me." It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (3713), al-Nasāʾī in "al-Khaṣāʾiṣ" (pp. 13 and 16-17), Ibn Ḥibbān (2203), al-Ḥākim (3/110), al-Ṭayālisī in "Musnad" (829), Aḥmad (4/437-438), and Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (2/568-569) through the route of Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān al-Ḍabʿī from Yazīd al-Rashk from Muṭarrif from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) dispatched an army and appointed ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib over them. He proceeded with the expedition and acquired a slave girl. They disapproved of his action and four of the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) agreed, saying: If we meet the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), we will inform him of what ʿAlī did. When the Muslims returned from their journey, they would first go to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) to greet him, then go to their homes. When the expedition returned, they greeted the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and one of the four stood up and said: O Messenger of Allāh! Did you not see ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib? He did such and such. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) turned away from him. Then the second stood up and said the same thing, and he turned away from him. Then the third stood up and said the same thing, and he turned away from him. Then the fourth stood up and said what they said, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) turned towards him, and anger was visible on his face, and he said: "He mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth, we do not know it except from the narration of Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān." I say: He is trustworthy, from the men of Muslim, as are the rest of its narrators, and for this reason, al-Ḥākim said: "Ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. The ḥadīth has a supporting narration reported by Ajlaḥ al-Kindī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah from his father Buraydah who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent two detachments to Yemen, one of which was led by ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib... and he mentioned the story similar to what was previously mentioned, and at the end of it:
